That changes the arithmetic in the homeowner's favor, and it is worth knowing why. Water from a supply line, a water heater, a dishwasher hose or a failed valve is category 1 clean water under the ANSI IICRC S500 standard, and reached quickly a great deal of the room survives: the carpet dried in place, the pad often saved, the drywall left standing and the cabinets dried from behind. Clean water does not stay clean

Category 1 water degrades. What a fast response saves

Structural drying here usually takes three to five days and is read daily with meters until the material is back to a dry standard measured against an unaffected part of the same building. Where the water was clean and the response was quick, the carpet can be cleaned afterward, and its drying time depends on the season.

Architect designed houses and the assemblies inside them

The postwar building period here produced houses with a good deal of built in cabinetry, paneled walls and floor assemblies that are not always what they appear to be from the room. Anything laminate or engineered on a floating floor traps water underneath and reads dry on top, so it is opened and measured before it is called dry. Paneling on furring holds a cavity nobody sees.

Cupped hardwood is dried before it is touched, because boards flatten as they dry and a floor sanded while it is still wet ends up crowned. Air is driven under the boards, and the moisture content is measured against an unaffected part of the same floor.
