Upholstery cleaning

Sheet 06 of 8

Scope

What this covers

Upholstery is cleaned by the code on its own label, because the wrong method on the wrong fabric causes damage that cleaning cannot undo. Foam and padding hold water long after the fabric on top feels dry, so the method is kept low in moisture and the piece is dried evenly under airflow rather than soaked and left. A fabric sofa is usually back in use in four to eight hours.

  • Reading the W, S, WS or X cleaning code before anything touches the fabric
  • A low moisture method wherever foam and padding hold water
  • Pre treatment of arms, headrests, seat fronts and cushion edges
  • Removal of body soil, sunscreen oils, dust mite allergen and many stains
  • EPA registered products, described as safe around pets and children
  • Even drying under airflow, so a cushion is not left damp overnight

Detail

Reading the cleaning code

Almost every upholstered piece carries a manufacturer tag with a single letter code on it. That letter decides what may be used on the fabric. The wrong method causes browning, watermarking or pile crush, and none of the three can be cleaned back out.

Upholstery Cleaning Drawn from the standard. This is a drawing and no reading on it is live. W S WS X

Drawn from the standard. This is a drawing and no reading on it is live. The W, S, WS or X code on the label decides the method.

W
Water based cleaning is allowed. Most synthetics and many blends sit here.
S
Solvent only. Water on an S coded fabric can brown it or leave a ring.
WS
Either method is allowed, so the choice follows the soil and the fill.
X
Vacuum only, no liquid of any kind. Cleaning is mechanical from start to finish.

Common questions

What people want to know before booking

How is the method chosen?

By the cleaning code on the manufacturer tag. W allows water based cleaning, S means solvent only, WS allows either, and X is vacuum only with no liquid at all. The tag is read before any product is opened, because water on an S coded fabric can cause a watermark that no later cleaning removes.

How long until the sofa is dry?

Usually four to eight hours for a fabric piece, sooner with airflow and lower humidity. Airflow after the visit matters as much on upholstery as on carpet, because a cushion core that stays damp overnight gives the smell back.

Is it safe around pets and children?

The products are EPA registered and described as safe around pets and children. Tell us when you book if anyone in the house has an allergy or a sensitivity, because the choice of pre spray and the amount of rinse are both adjustable.

Can you clean furniture that got wet?

Yes, once it is dry and once the frame and the fill have been assessed. Furniture that met clean water and has a solid hardwood frame is usually worth restoring. Storm water or sewage means the porous fill goes.

The method

The tag decides the method

The manufacturer code is read before anything else happens, and where the tag is missing the fiber is tested on a hidden panel. Velvet, linen and silk blends each take a different tool, dwell time and amount of moisture. The damage from getting that wrong is permanent: browning on a natural fiber that was wetted too far, a watermark where a wet edge dried faster than the middle, crushed pile where a velvet was worked the wrong way.

Why the method is kept low in moisture

Foam and padding hold water, and a cushion core keeps it well past the point where the fabric on top feels dry. The method is kept low in moisture and the extraction pass is worked more slowly instead of wetter. Airflow goes across the piece afterwards and the cushions are stood on edge, so both faces dry at the same rate.

What is in a sofa

Dust mite allergen concentrates in a sofa, because that is where people spend hours in direct contact. Mites do well between about seventy and eighty degrees Fahrenheit at a relative humidity above fifty percent, which is an unconditioned North Jersey bedroom in July. The allergen sits in the fecal particulate, which becomes airborne when somebody sits down, and the cushion core is a reservoir that surface vacuuming barely touches.

Sunscreen, body oils and the stain that appears in September

Most sunscreens carry avobenzone or mineral oxides suspended in oil. The oil migrates into the fiber and then oxidizes, so an invisible spot in July turns yellow brown by September. Treating it early with the correct solvent based pre spray is the difference between removal and a permanent mark. Body oils on arms and headrests behave the same way.

Blotting a spill so it can still be removed

Blot immediately and press instead of rubbing. Rubbing drives the spill down into the fill, and a spill that has reached the foam can wick back up to the face fabric as the piece dries. Use a clean white towel, because a colored cloth can transfer its own dye into a damp fabric.

Protector, and what it does not do

Fabric protector does not make a sofa spill proof. It lowers the surface energy of the fiber so a liquid beads and sits on top long enough for a blot to lift it, and it reduces the way dry soil clings. It only works on clean fiber: applying protector over soil locks the soil in and wastes the product, so the order is clean, dry, apply, then cure. It wears off in the seats and arms that get used, so reapplication belongs to each professional visit.

Furniture after a water loss

Get wet furniture up off wet flooring straight away, onto blocks or foil tabs, or the wood legs will stain the floor and the floor will keep the piece wet. A solid hardwood frame that met clean water is a strong candidate for restoration. Particleboard and engineered frames that absorbed water lose structural integrity. Foam cores can often be flushed and dried when the water was clean, while anything that met storm water or sewage goes.

Watermarks, odor and antique pieces

A watermark ring along the wick line is cleaned out by taking the whole panel, because a spot clean on a wet edge simply moves the line. Odor is neutralized at the source. Antique and high value pieces are inspected before any water is introduced, because some historic finishes, glues and dyes are not water safe.

Between professional cleanings

Vacuum the cushions weekly with an upholstery tool, rotate and flip them so wear stays even, and hold the humidity in the room between forty five and fifty percent, which suppresses mite populations. Households with pets or allergy sufferers generally do better on two professional cleanings a year than on one.

What the visit includes

Sofas, sectionals, armchairs, dining chairs and ottomans are cleaned at your home or business across the six counties, by appointment, and the work carries a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

Question 1: What do the letters on the furniture tag mean?

They are the manufacturer cleaning code and they decide the method. W allows water based cleaning, S means solvent only, WS allows either, and X means vacuum only. The tag is usually under a cushion or on the deck of the frame.

Question 2: How long does an upholstered sofa take to dry?

Usually four to eight hours, and sooner with a fan on it and the air conditioning running. A low moisture method is used precisely so the cushion core is not left holding water, because a core that stays damp overnight brings the smell back.

Question 3: Can you clean microfiber, velvet and linen?

Yes, read by the code and tested first. Velvet takes a different tool and direction of work so the pile is not crushed, linen and other natural fibers are kept low in moisture so they do not brown, and microfiber usually cleans well on a water based method.

Question 4: Will cleaning get rid of the smell?

Body soil and most odors come out when the source is reached and neutralized. A smell that returns means material is still affected or still damp, and where that material is the fill instead of the fabric it has to be replaced. That is said at the estimate.

Question 5: Do you clean upholstery after water damage?

Yes, and the same technicians handle the water loss itself. The frame, the fill and the water category decide what is worth restoring: hardwood frames and clean water are good candidates, engineered frames and sewage water are not.
