The first day, in order

What the West End and the older streets need
In the Victorian stock the aim is to save original material where the readings allow it. A measured cut line above the water mark, with the cavity behind it dried, saves most of a plaster wall. Wide board and strip hardwood are dried with air driven underneath the boards, and a cupped floor is not sanded until the moisture content matches an unaffected part of the same floor, because boards flatten as they dry and a floor sanded early ends up crowned.
Trim and moldings come off carefully and go back, which is a small thing that matters a great deal to the people who chose these houses. Wood lath plaster in the Victorian streets and the rock lath of the 1920s boom hold water differently, so each is measured at a named point behind the finish before the wall is closed.
